FREELANCE WRITING FOR DUMMIES
is a two-day workshop that takes the freelance writer-wannabe through the whats, whys, whens, and hows of freelance writing in the Philippines. It will tackle the myths, the realities, and the possibilities that make freelance writing intriguing, challenging, and—ultimately—fun. Whether one seeks to freelance part-time or full-time, this workshop will show that a freelance writing career can be rewarding.

Who should join?
- Anyone who is considering writing freelance—whether part-time or full-time—and would like to get “tips from the trenches.”
- Part-time freelance writers who are looking to build full-time writing careers
- Students and young professionals who would like to keep their options open

Who is conducting the workshop?
The workshop will be facilitated by Niña Terol, a full-time freelance writer, communications consultant, and emerging social entrepreneur who writes for a living and writes because she loves it. She is a regular contributor for MEGA Magazine and has also written for Philippine Daily Inquirer, myHome, Entrepreneur Philippines, Smart Parenting, Cosmo Philippines, Pinoy World, and Starfish, among others. She has also worked with a large number of corporations, enterprises, non-profit organizations, and government agencies—allowing her to immerse fully in her craft and all its nuances. Geek Lifestyle Bootcamp this October 18

Kolektib’s Geek Bootcamp  is an alternative computing course that aims to give you practical tutorials and guidelines on day-to-day technology. The program was developed for people who are confused and overwhelmed over the abundance of tools available and would like cut to the chase by just using what works best. It’s all about becoming a geek in the fastest way possible.

Okay, but the program is not really going to be that geeky. This means you will not learn how to assemble a PC (somebody else can do it for you) nor program a website from scratch (we’d rather work with free templates). You’re a rockstar, your time is valuable.

This bootcamp is for people who want to work smarter, not harder. It’s for people who don’t have time to learn how doohickeys work but to learn the EXACT STEPS to get things done at the fastest time possible. Just how exactly do you use these tools with the least commitment while exploiting all the benefits?

In this bootcamp we will teach you how to:

• Take advantage of Flickr and change the way you manage and store your pictures.
• Polish your Google skills, allowing to find (or stalk) the information that you need.
• Impress people with your Adobe Photoshop skills with with 2-minute tutorials.
• Pimp out your web browser with Firefox plugins.
• Develop a comfort level with Microsoft Excel and appreciate shortcuts.
• Share your library online and track which ones were borrowed.
• Satisfy your daily news fix with RSS and how to manage the information overload.
• Really take advantage of 3G and why you should upgrade your phone now.
• Harvest twenty mp3s that you like every day and how to discover music you never knew existed.
• Make your relatives proud by turning your USB flash drive into the swiss knife of geekery and PC troubleshooting.
• Find a template for every situation. Never reinvent the wheel again.
• Come up with a direct to the point Powerpoint presentation in two minutes.
• Find the best free stock photos, fonts and other stuff you need for your projects.

For inquiries, you may send me an email at jcmedina [at] gmail [dot] com.

The class is free!

PRODUCTS THAT ARE PEOPLE

I got myself a birthday gift last week.

An iMac G4, the “lampshade” incarnation of this iconic computer.

The funny thing is that I didn’t buy it to use it. I got it because I just love collecting lustfully designed Apple stuff.

This Apple machine is not just a machine; It’s a piece of art.
It’s ambiently appealing furniture.

And it got me thinking.

This was an emotional purchase. I just needed to have it. I don’t need another computer after all.

And looking at it now gives me a weird sense of joy, as if I were playing with a real live pet. *the flexible crane monitor is so fun to move around!*

It’s something that Apple products are brilliant at. Communicating personality.

I remember when I was in Singapore a couple of years back. A friend had just bought his first iPod. Cradling it in his hand gave him that similar sense of joy that i feel with my new toy. In fact, he was so happy with it that he gave it a name, dubbing it “Snoop”. The it became a he.

The technical term for this is “anthropomorphization”. Wherein people relate with objects as if they were other people. The object begins to take on a personification.

But it cuts both ways. People can treat objects with disdain – just think of all those images of people shouting at traffic lights or kicking errant vending machines.

Or they can evoke positive emotions, like boys talking to their cars. Or women cuddling their jewelry.

As a product designer, you definitely want the latter. In a very twisted sense, the products that truly succeed become almost like a best friend, or a lover.

Now, back to my new toy …
